Is there a good age for children to start playing Golf?
Any age is good as long as they have suitable equipment… clubs that are too long or heavy can be detrimental to a child's golf development. I teach children as young as 3.

Please could you list all the necessary equipment a child would require to get started playing Golf?
Nothing as this is provided by the club at junior lessons… just trainers and themselves to begin with!

Are there any particular brands of equipment you would recommend for beginners?
US Kids Golf and PING… or Long Dogs..

How much would someone expect to pay for good quality items listed above?
£18 per club.. some makes are cheaper such as Ogre(masters) at £10 a club.

Is there a second hand market for these items? If so, are then any particular signs someone should look out for to ensure the equipment will stand the test of time?
Yes there is a market for second hand equipment but you are better off dealing through a professional as they can guide you on sizing etc.

Is there any ongoing maintenance of this equipment required?
Just a quick scrub with an old toothbrush after every use to keep them clean…

Can you recommend a handful of good quality instruction books that will help a child to make a flying start with this sport?
Tiger Woods…How I play Golf is always a good choice… but there are so many out there.. check out Amazon for kids golf books.

How much should a parent expect to pay for lessons?
£15 for a half hour individual lesson and £4 for an hours group session.

How can parents identify a good teacher/club (qualifications etc)?
They will have child protection qualifications, be CRB checked and a PGA professional.

To become proficient, how many hours per week would you suggest a child should practice?
A few hours a week will be sufficient to progress… finding time between all other activities is always tough.

Although it will vary from child to child how long does it normally take for a child to become competent in this sport?
A few months or so.. children learn really quickly!!

Are there any formal qualifications in this sport that the child should aim to achieve?
YMG certificates and Golf Foundation certificates.

Are there any other important tips you could offer?
Enjoy golf.. the while point of the game is it should be fun so find a club that is friendly and supports the junior section.
