Athletics Coaching

Getting children involved in sports has many benefits. They get to make new friends, keep fit and also have the chance to compete in and win competitions. Athletics in the U.K. seems to have become a bit unfashionable in recent times, but it offers children such a wide variety of disciplines to try.

Therefore if they are not the fastest sprinter the world has ever seen they may find that they are good at high jump, throwing the javelin, shot put or one of the many other areas of the sport. Even with the running based track events a child may find that even though sprinting is not their game they excel over longer distances.

Many children will gain their first exposure to athletics at school. Those that show an aptitude for the sport are then likely to continue their development through the junior section of a local athletics club.

The likelihood is that in most schools only a limited number of disciplines are taught. Therefore it is more likely to be through a club that you are to be able to explore your child's true capabilities. There are plenty of athletics clubs dotted around the country with one in most larger towns and cities. The majority of these clubs have junior sections and coaching programs are run by qualified coaches.

Another advantage of joining a club is that it will introduce your child to a number of other children with a similar interest.

In addition to contacting your local club your children can also try Norwich Union star:track. This is a scheme sponsored by Norwich Union. As well as being embraced by athletics clubs star:track schemes are also run by schools and local councils. In fact around 500 venues throughout the country offer the scheme.

star:track is available for children aged between 8 and 15. It runs for a week and provides coaching in a number of the different athletic disciplines giving children the opportunity to find ones they enjoy competing in. A child does not have to have tried athletics before or to have shown any great ability to try star:track.

After the star:track week has finished many children go onto to join a local athletics club. Contacts for clubs are available during star:track.

With many schools running star:track weeks it is worth enquiring at your local schools to see if they are running a scheme in the near future.
