Women to become main earners
A recent report predicts that 1 in 4 women will become the main household earners by 2030. The research carried out by the Future Foundation for National Savings and Investments also predict women will be the main financial decision maker in the majority of homes within 10 years.
Women now contribute an increasing proportion of household income and are now having greater reponsibility in financial household decisions.
Women's income has traditionally been lower than mens as they have generally stayed at home to raise the children. Now 27% of 16-24 year old women claim they would like to be the main household earner.
William Nelson, of the Future Foundation, said: "In 2007, we are seeing the emergence of a generation of women who are better educated, more ambitious, and more financially confident than any before them. This generation is already more likely to handle day-to-day financial matters than their male partners, and demands to have at least an equal say in the big decisions."
