Parents Spend £4.6 billion on University Children
Parents spend £4.6 billion on kitting out their kids with gadgets for Uni
But students aren’t using them to study!!
Today’s parents are spending an astonishing £4.6 billion per year kitting out their children for university (approximately £1,860 per student), believing they need the most modern technology to survive their studies. So they will be shocked to hear that 87% of students polled for dot mobile admitted to using their gadgets not for studying but for socialising – an acceptable main part of the university lifestyle!
Ten years ago, the student kit of ‘essentials’ was little more than a toasted sandwich maker, a CD player, a notepad and pen. How times have changed, today we don‘t seem to be able to function without our gadgets!
On average, a student will spend over 20 hours a week using their gadgets to communicate with their mates in comparison with only 9 hours putting them to educational use. In terms of internet usage, social networking sites take up most of students’ laptop time with 76% admitting they spend more time on them than researching their course.
The top ten items chosen by students as their most essential items were as follows:
Mobile phone
Internet access
USB stick
Laptop
iPod
DVD player and DVDs
Sound system
TV
George Foreman Lean Grilling Machine
Alarm clock
