Police Chief calls for Change to Alcohol Laws
Cheshire Police Chief Constable says Alcohol is too cheap and parents are turning a "blind eye" to their children's underage drinking and anti-social behaviour.
'Every night of the week, Cheshire officers and our PCSOs are engaged in a constant battle against antisocial behaviour and alcohol-induced violence,' says the Chief Constable. 'Most of the bad behaviour is fuelled by alcohol, much of it supplied by adults, including some parents.'
Mr Fahy has said that he would like to raise the legal age of drinking from 18 to 21 and that all drinking in public areas should be banned. "I would like to see the emphasis change the other way, where we say drinking in public is not permitted apart from those areas where a local community, local authorities say 'yes, in this particular park, this particular location, people can drink".
Mr Fahy believes that the problem is not with extended drinking hours but with the readily avaiable alcohol at shops and supermarkets being sold to underage children.
Mr Fahy would like to see Police given the powers to send groups of Rowdy teenagers home and for alcohol prices to be increased.
