MMR Scare Doctor faces GMC Charges
The Doctor who initially suggested there was a link between autism and the MMR vaccination is being charged with professional misconduct by the General Medical Council (GMC).
The GMC allege Dr Andrew Wakefield and two other colleagues were unethical and dishonest in their representations to the Lancet Jornal which published their findings. The Lancet Journal has since dis-owned the publication of Dr. Wakefield's 1998 paper.
It is alleged that Dr. Wakefield received funding from parents who were seeking possible legal action as they believed their children had been damaged by the vaccination.
In addition to this the GMC also claim that Dr. Wakefield obtained his test results unethically suggesting he took blood samples from children at his son's birthday party.
After the findings were published MMR vaccination rates fell to 80% raising concerns of a measles epidemic.
Dr Wakefield's solicitor said: "Dr Wakefield continues to vigorously deny any allegation of wrongdoing."
Since the paper was published in 1998 major studies have found no link between the MMR vaccination and autism.
