What Your Year 1 Child Needs to Know

How do you know what this is?

Is it the cluster of islands in the north-west? The southern-most tip pointing towards warmer climes, or East Anglia's bump?? The borders of the British Isles, to some just wobbly lines, tell many stories from the Battle of Hastings along the south-east coast to the forever changing hands of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north-east.

The use of maps, employed by weather forecasters to guide viewers' expectant eyes and drivers to navigate from one place to the next, is never-ending: borders are moving; local interests growing and perspectives changing. An ability to recognise and read maps is necessary to get from A to B, and so to get on in life.

The same is true of all core disciplines: a shared knowledge of the arts, humanities and sciences helps us get on with life together. What Your Year 1 Child Needs to Know is designed for parents and teachers who want to make sure their children and pupils access this core knowledge. It's the first in a series of six resource books to supplement learning at home and in the classroom, or it can be used as the basis of a knowledge-rich homeschooling education.

Preparing for Year 1

Beautifully illustrated throughout and neatly arranged into six chapters, these books outline essential knowledge and skills in English language and literature, history and geography, visual arts, music, science and maths. The many references between pages mean you can dip into chapters as you please: the English literature chapter may direct you to the visual arts chapter to look at an illustration of a famous tale; in turn you may be pointed in the direction of the history and geography chapter to find out about an artwork's historical context.

Each of the six chapters provides helpful hints and activities to enjoy with your child. This includes discussion starting points, science experiments, musical games and art activities as well as enriching stories and poems. These activies all help children to learn about the past and the world around us, to look and talk about art and build a coherent foundation in maths.

Civitas, an educational charity, is publishing a book for each school year. Teachers and home educators can use these resources to flesh out the Core Knowledge Sequence UK, a guide to the skill and content to deliver in each school year. Used together, they form the Core Knowledge Curriculum, which can be implemented to achieve National Curriculum objectives, or used as a springboard for a coherent, cumulative and content-rich alternative. But these books are more than just a classroom resource: they provide the means for you to supplement your child's learning at home in a way that will enrich and expand their education.
