Measles Symptoms and Suggested Action


What are the symptoms to look for in diagnosing Measles?
Early signs can include runny nose, fever, cough and general feeling of being unwell. A red rash will then start to form and this will spread to become red blotches on the skin.


How soon should the child see a doctor?
As soon as possible to confirm diagnosis.


Should the child be taken to hospital with this condition?
If your child suffers from headaches, earache, rapid breathing, drowsiness or vomiting and your doctor is unavailable then take your child to the hospital.


What is the normal procedure for treating Measles?
Paracetamol to reduce fever.
A doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection that occurs as a result of your child being rundown.


Does this illness require long-term treatment and care?
Not normally. In most cases the measles will last approximately 7 days.


How is Measles normally contracted?
Measles is spread in air-borne droplets i.e. an infected person coughing or sneezing.


Is Measles contagious? If so, how long should the patient be contained?
Measles is very infectious. The measles virus is contagious from approx 14 days before the rash develops and for 5 days after the rash appears.


Is Measles particularly dangerous if contracted by a particular group i.e. The elderly or the very young?
Measles can be dangerous if contracted by the following -

  • Pregnant women - can cause death of the fetus
  • People with weak immune systems

Can the patient contract Measles again after recovery?
No. The body is immune for life.


Are any vaccinations available to prevent the contraction of Measles?
The MMR vaccination will give immunity to approximately 90% of recipients. The MMR vaccination is normally administered to children between 12 and 15 months.


What do you recommend the child should do to aid the recovery process?
Let your child be themselves and give them plenty of fluids. Try to keep them away from siblings and friends if possible.


What is the normal recovery period for this type of infection?
7 days


Can Measles cause long-term suffering/disability for the child? If so, what suffering/disability is caused?
In extreme cases an illness called Encephalitis can be caused by the measles infecting the brain. This can cause headaches, vomiting, dowsiness and can lead to possible brain damage.
