Cot Death

Cot death is the sudden un-explained death of a baby. Post-mortem examination will be unable to determine the reason for death and the death will often be registered as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Around 300 babies die of cot death each year in the UK, the majority of these deaths occur when the baby is under 6 months old.

Because there are no obvious reasons for cot death it is not possible to prevent it, however a number of ways to reduce the risk have been identified -

  • Babies should be placed on their backs to sleep

  • A baby should be kept in the bedroom with it's parents for the first 6 months to enable the parents to keep a close eye on them

  • Do not overheat your baby whilst sleeping, a good room temperature is between 16-20ºC

  • Avoid bedding such as sleeping bags as it is difficult for a baby to wriggle out if they are hot

  • Avoid duvets, quilts and sheepskins

  • Place your babies feet at the foot of the cot to prevent them from wriggling down under their covers

  • Parents should not smoke during pregnancy

  • No smoking in the same room as the baby

  • Do not sleep in the same bed as your baby if you have been smoking or are under the influence of alcohol.
