The National Coal Mining Museum provides a unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Experienced local miners guide parties around the underground workings, where models and machinery depict methods and conditions of mining from the early 1800s to the present day. Your guide underground will be an experienced local miner and you'll see the hidden world of coal mining from the early 1800s to the present day. The temperature underground is 12c. We strongly recommend warm practical clothing and flat-heeled sensible shoes. Visitors will be divided into groups of 19 plus the guide at the museum. We regret that children under 5 are not allowed underground, but are admitted free to the surface. The museum has disabled access - underground tours for disabled visitors are available also by prior arrangement.
Special DiscountThe Museum and underground tour are both free attractions providing a valuable insight into British Culture.
